Proverbs 1:1-7

Discussion Questions
1. Who is someone you consider to be wise? Why do you consider them to be wise?
2. Would you consider yourself to be a disciplined person? Why or why not? In what areas of your life are you the least disciplined?

Verses 1:1-6
1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 For learning wisdom and discipline; for understanding insightful sayings;
3 for receiving prudent instructionin righteousness, justice, and integrity;
4 for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced, knowledge and discretion to a young man—
5 let a wise person listen and increase learning, and let a discerning person obtain guidance—
6 for understanding a proverb or a parable, the words of the wise, and their riddles.

Questions to Ponder

Verse 1:1 – Review
1. Who wrote these proverbs? What is a proverb?
2. Who is the author related to?

Verses 1:2-6
1. Verses 2 through 6 give the purpose statement for the book of Proverbs. What are the purposes? (Underline and take note of the purposes mentioned.)
2. Who are the four types of people described in these verses and what can they gain from reading and learning the sayings in this book?
3. What category of person would you place yourself in?
4. Does God want his children to grow in these characteristics described here in this section of Proverbs? Why? What characteristics listed in this passage do you need to grow in most?

Verse 1:7
7 The fear of the Lord
is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Questions to Ponder
1. Where does knowledge begin according to Solomon in verse 7? Do you agree with Solomon? Why might the fear of the Lord be the beginning of wisdom for a person?
2. What does it mean to have the “fear of the Lord”?
3. ReadPsalm128:1- Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in obedience to him.
4. What does this verse in Psalms tell us about the fear of the Lord? How might obedience relate to the fear of the Lord?
5. Do you think the fear of the Lord changes as we mature in our faith? Why or why not?
6. What do fools despise? Why might foolish people hate these things?

Concluding Thoughts and Questions
1. What is something from our passage or study you are challenged to ponder further this week?
2. Should a Christian seek advice or wisdom from a nonbeliever? Why or why not? Explain your thinking.
3. Who is someone in your life that would benefit from reading Proverbs? Would you commit to praying for that person and possibly inviting them to our Saturday morning men’s group?
4. How could you personally benefit from reading Proverbs?
